Frequently asked questions for those who want to enroll in the master's course

In this section you will be able to answer your main doubts regarding the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at UFABC. if you still have other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail: ppgebm@ufabc.edu.br

 1. What is UFABC's master's course in Biomedical Engineering?

It is a master's course in the stricto sensu modality, recognized and regulated by CAPES with a grade of 3. The student has a period of up to 24 months for completion after enrollment. At the end, the student will have the title of Master in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration area in Biomedical Engineering. To obtain a master's degree, the student must complete credits in disciplines, prepare a dissertation under the guidance of a professor from the program. Check the UFABC rules and the Program's Internal Regulations HERE.

 2. What are the prerequisites for joining the course?

For admission, the candidate must enroll in one of the selection processes. Two selective processes are opened per year. For registration, the candidate must present a research project, an acceptance letter from his/her future advisor, in addition to personal documents and a graduation diploma. Thus, the main prerequisites are: having a university degree recognized and having the consent of a future advisor.

 3. What are the admission periods?

The selection processes for admission to the course take place twice a year. The first selection process starts in May, with classes beginning in September, and the second selection process takes place in October, with classes beginning in February of the following year. The program follows the academic calendar of UFABC and the Dean of Graduate Studies (PROPG), available in https://propg.ufabc.edu.br/matriculas/.

 4. How do I join?

Admission is made via the selection process. For registration, the candidate must submit the documentation requested, and also a research project, which must be prepared in conjunction with an advisor. Therefore, before applying, the candidate must consult our list of advisors (available HERE) and send an e-mail to the person who has a line of research that he/she likes most. Once the candidate and advisor are in agreement, the project and an acceptance letter of guidance must be attached to the application form for the selection process.

 5. How is the selection process?

Usually, the selection process consists of a written test composed of multiple choice questions in mathematics and biology; it also consists of curriculum lattes analysis, analysis of the documents sent, analysis of the research project and interview. The content for the written tests can be found HERE.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current selection processes are composed of curriculum lattes analysis, analysis of submitted documents and analysis of the research project.

 6. How does the course work?

The course is entirely on-site, and the activities or disciplines are offered every four months, according to the UFABC academic calendar available HERE. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, subjects are being taught remotely in this period. Most subjects are offered during the week and in the afternoon, and some are also offered at night. The planning of course offerings can be found HERE.

In addition to the disciplines, the student must prepare the dissertation, which may contain different experiments as planned with the advisor. The execution of the experiments must follow the schedule set out in the research project, being possible to use the entire research infrastructure of UFABC for this. Timetables can be arranged with the advisor or laboratory heads, and work on holidays and weekends is possible upon authorization.

The research laboratories of the Biomedical Engineering course can be found HERE. The infrastructure of the UFABC, with the website of available multi-user laboratories can be viewed HERE

 7. How do I take courses as a special student?

Before the beginning of each four-month period, notices are published for special students. Special students can take the disciplines normally to obtain concepts. If the student later enrolls as a regular student in a postgraduate course at UFABC, he/she may request the validation of the credits of the subjects taken as a special student. Notices for special students of the Biomedical Engineering course are available HERE.

 8. I missed the deadline to apply as a special student. Can I take courses anyway?

Yes, in this case you will be able to take courses as a listening student. However, the listening student has no academic record and, therefore, cannot request credit validation. However, this will depend on the acceptance of the professor and the coordination of the course.

 9. Are there scholarships?

Unfortunately, there are few possibilities for institutional scholarships and, when they exist, they are intended for students who have exclusive dedication to the course and who are the best placed in each selection process, according to the rules described HERE. For this reason, the student is advised to talk to the future advisor and check the possibility of submitting an application for a scholarship to FAPESP.

 10. How much does the course cost?

There are no costs for the course or for enrolling in the selection process.

 11. What is the profile of the accepted students? Do I need to be graduated in Biomedical Engineering to do the Masters?

The UFABC course is multidisciplinary and, therefore, professionals from different backgrounds can apply, both in the exact areas (Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Bachelor of Science and Technology, etc.) and in the biological and health areas (Biologists, Pharmacists, Doctors, Dentists, Physiotherapists, Biomedical etc). Depending on the student's background, there are specific mandatory disciplines, as can be seen HERE.

 12. I am a student at UFABC and completed the BC&T. Can I take a master's degree together with a post-BC&T course?

Yes, you can; however, you must pay attention to the time you will allocate to each of the activities.

 13. In which languages are the disciplines offered?

Mostly in Portuguese, but some can be offered in English.

 14. Does UFABC offer student housing?

It doesn't, but there are many republics close to UFABC.
