RESUMO:

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a non-invasive measurement technique capable
of determining physiological and morphological changes in skeletal muscle tissue. The method
consists of injecting a small flow of alternating electrical current over the skin through two
equidistant electrodes and measuring the opposition of the medium to that current, determining
bioimpedance. MIE has contributed to the study of degenerative diseases such as amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS) that alters the electrical characteristics of the muscle with the evolution
of the disease. The objective of this work is to develop a portable and low-cost impedance
measurement instrument to assist in activities related to the study and diagnosis of muscle
diseases. The equipment, called Impedance Meter, uses the tetrapolar configuration, where two
electrodes inject the excitation current and two others measure the voltage drop over the region of
interest. For this purpose, the Impedance Meter is composed of two analog measurement channels,
one to determine the amplitude and phase of the voltage and the other of the current. With these
data, bioimpedance is determined using Ohm’s Law by dividing the demodulated amplitude and
phase values of the voltage by the amplitude and phase values of the current. The Impedance
Meter is under development and a prototype has been built. Each measurement channel of the
built equipment uses an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with 24 bits of resolution and a
sampling rate of 625 kHz. An open source Arduino Due platform is used to record samples
discretized by the ADC and perform the necessary demodulation calculation to determine the
amplitude and phase of the measured sine wave. The microcontroller also controls peripherals
used for the Human Machine Interface by sending the calculated data to a digital display, as
well as to the microcomputer via the USB port. Experimental tests are being carried out on a
phantom with known impedances built exclusively for the Impedance Meter. The phantom was
built through serial associations between resistors and commercial capacitors to simulate the
real bioimpedance characteristic of organic tissues. The equipment is still under development,
however, laboratory tests indicate that the Impedance Meter can be a promising and low-cost
alternative for the study and research related to electrical impedance myography.
