The social meanings of the idea of austerity in Brazil in recent years: how it legitimizes or constrains policy makers
The foundations of the idea of fiscal austerity of governments, however, may be traced back to ideas propagated from the premises of the classics of philosophical and economic thought, individualism and its worldview, which shaped the phenomenon of modernity, permeating the marginalist revolution and preoccupation with it to have a method to justify itself as a science, detached from politics, of a technical nature, through the importation of analogies and metaphors from the natural sciences, until the formalization of the economist's profession and its becoming in the social world, the performativity of the market-based order. in a process materially oriented by American hegemony; that reaches contemporary societies through an irreducible imperative that afflicts any other sciences.
This paper seeks to show how this idea of austerity formed in the history of economic thought has a symbolic power to assert itself as what produces reality itself, and how this globalized idea of austerity and a pre-defined prescription of economic policy legitimize or constrain the “ policy makers ”-
