DESIGNING ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE TO SUPPORT INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY IN ENGINEERING COMPANIES IN PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA
This dissertation explores the design of organizational culture to foster innovation and creativity in engineering companies located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It addresses the growing necessity for these companies to adapt and innovate in an increasingly competitive and dynamic global market. The study investigates the barriers and challenges engineering firms face in nurturing a conducive environment for innovation and creativity, examining elements such as hierarchical structures, risk aversion, outdated infrastructure, and limited access to resources. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data through surveys and interviews with employees from various engineering companies in Port Harcourt. The literature review encompasses themes of organizational culture, leadership, employee engagement, and best practices for fostering innovation. Key theories and frameworks are discussed. Findings indicate that leadership plays a crucial role in setting an innovative tone within organizations, while factors like communication channels, decision-making processes, and resource allocation significantly impact the ability to innovate. The study also highlights the importance of empowering employees, promoting continuous learning, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. The dissertation concludes with practical recommendations for engineering firms in Port Harcourt, suggesting strategies such as implementing training initiatives, establishing innovation laboratories, and fostering an environment that promotes experimentation and idea generation. These insights aim to help engineering companies enhance their innovation capabilities, thus driving sustainable growth and competitive advantage in the industry. The research ultimately seeks to contribute to the economic development of Port Harcourt and Nigeria by enabling engineering firms to thrive through innovation and creativity.
