TÍTULO:

Valorization of the Textile Residues as Precursor for Mesoporous Magnetic Activated Carbon, and Cellulose Source to the Synthesis of Platform Chemicals

PÁGINAS: 186
RESUMO:

“Green”, “Eco”, “Environmentally-friendly” are terms that are commonly used today for services and products everywhere. And in science is not different, where wastes are being studied for transformation and use in many applications. Most studies focus on the reuse of agro-industrial waste such as bark, seed, bagasse. However, we are neglecting an important feedstock source that can be found anywhere: the textile wastes. In the last 15 years, clothing production has approximately doubled driven by a growing middle-class population across the globe, and by the “fast fashion” phenomena. It is generated around 2.7 million ton of textile waste in Brazil, and 38 million ton in the world which are sent to landfill or incinerated in a year. Therefore, the aim of this study is to valorize the textile residues suggesting a variety of applications from different type of fibers. Cotton fabric was used as adsorbent to remove color from textile dyeing process wastewater. Iron nitrate (Fe(NO3)3) was impregnated on the fabric, resulting in a 70 % color removal in 30 min. The dye adsorbed fabric was pyrolyzed at 800 oC, 2 h, producing a magnetic mesoporous activated carbon (MAC) with α Fe specie. This MAC was tested as an electrocatalyst support with Pd nanoparticles in an alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell, resulting in a better
performance than commercial Pd catalyst, achieving a high energy production of 27 mW cm
-2 at 80 oC. A study of adsorption mechanism and MAC production from different fiber types was conducted with pure and mixed polyester, cotton, elastane. Dye adsorption with cotton, fits the pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, with the Fe(NO3)3 enhancing the adsorption capacity of the fabric up to 35 mg g-1, by decreasing pH of the solution and also forming positive charged Fe complex aquaions, agglomerating the dye molecule on the fabric surface. MAC produced from fabrics without dye adsorption, developed lower pore surface area as well as an iron specie with lower magnetization (Fe3O4) compared to the MAC produced from the fabric used for dye
adsorption.
Viscose fabric, a fabric with increasing consumption in woman apparel, was preliminary tested as cellulose source in a 1 % HCl : γ-valerolactone (1:1) solution, by microwave reaction at 130 oC, for 15 min resulting in 38 % mass conversion of fabric to glucose, 6 % to 5HMF and 3 % to levulinic acid. Finally, denim fabric scraps (also a highly consumed fabric in Brazil for jeans wear), were tested to produced a Ag impregnated
activated carbon (Ag-AC) for medical use as curative (bandage) in skin injuries treatment. Nitric acid was introduced as a chemical activating agent, which together with silver nitrate produced a Ag-AC of 524 m
2 g-1 BET surface area and 5 % metallic Ag loading, and demonstrated no cytotoxicity. Social impact is also relevant  in countries like Brazil. Including the fabrics as a “recyclable” item, it will increase the income of recycling agents, decrease municipal solid waste collection costs and extend landfill lifetime
