Electrical impedance tomography is an inverse problem that aims to obtain information on the electrical properties of a region of interest from electrical voltage measurements around that same region. Being an ill-posed problem, its discretization for computational solution results in ill-conditioned systems of equations, unstable in the presence of noise and modeling errors. One way to solve it is using the regularization method, which considers the reconstruction as an optimization problem and restricts the solution space with prior information about the solutions.

This thesis studies the combination of regularization and deep learning paradigms in the reconstruction of electrical impedance tomography images. Specifically, convolutional neural networks that perform denoising and artifact removal were included in conventional algorithms for reconstructing absolute images and difference images. Both the case in which all electrodes are available and the case of progressive deactivation of electrodes were considered. The proposals showed performance gains without the need for a significant increase in computing resources, indicating the potential that deep learning can bring to the research field of electrical impedance tomography.
