TITLE:

Split and Spreading of Spectrum Slices as Security Strategy in Elastic Optical Networks

SUMMARY:

There are strong predictions that the next generation of corporate networks will have EON as an indispensable component. This is because it provides spectrum resources to save bandwidth used for each request, without needing to allocate demand in fixed channels, as in WDM technology. Other research has brought benefits such as the fact that in the EON spectrum, resources are generally composed of frequency slices with finer granularity. Each connection request can therefore use several frequency slices in the appropriate size so that the size of the requested bandwidth is always met while maintaining the adjacency of the positions (contiguity) of the frequency slices. Each of these portions is called a slot or FSU. The composition of multiple continuously arranged FSUs is treated here as spectrum slices. The premise of this work is to break the rigor of maintaining contiguity using the Split Spectrum (SS) technique in EON. Although the use of this technique to improve performance is not new, within the scope of this work, the SS aims to provide encryption of signals at the physical layer, including the diversity of paths provided by the routing process. For this work, two different simulators are used, OfNetSim and VPI Photonics(M), to study the transport and physical layers. New features for OfNetSim were developed to allow operation with SS. VPI Photonics(M) simulation enables the study of the physical layer distribution of sliced and encrypted signals. The results that have been obtained so far refer to the transport layer, using OfNetSim to demonstrate SS in various scenarios of optical network topologies in terms of performance and some limitations in terms of the maximum number of spectral portions that a slice could be split.
