SUMMARY:

The Billings reservoir, considered the largest in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo,
plays a crucial role in supplying water to the population and generating power at the
Henry Borden Power Plant. In addition, the plant has a considerable installed capacity,
contributing to the electricity supply in the region. When it comes to water resources
management and energy planning, water transfers from the Tietê and Pinheiros rivers to
Billings are carried out in order to prevent flooding in the city of São Paulo and to
improve the use of the Henry Borden Power Plant in the State of São Paulo. However,
the transfer of water can cause environmental impacts, such as reduced water quality,
both in the donor and recipient rivers, which can compromise the water supply in the
region. Therefore, it is essential to adopt appropriate management and monitoring
measures to minimize the impacts of water transfers, ensuring the sustainable use of
water resources and the preservation of the Billings reservoir as an important source in
the region. For this, a database was created to store the input information of the
implemented numerical model, which are the daily flows and water quality
compounds of the rivers involved in the transfer. It is noteworthy that all data are
made available by public agencies responsible for the management of water resources
in Brazil. The preliminary results point to the need to decontaminate the waters of the
Pinheiros and Tietê rivers, for better use in the generation of the Henry Borden plant,
in addition, the depollution will benefit the population of the metropolitan region of
São Paulo, which is supplied by the Billings reservoir. It is hoped that the results of this
research will help decision-makers to better define strategies regarding the energy
sector, especially when related to hydroelectric plants, which is currently the largest
source of power generation in the country.
