SUMMARY:

During the Wind Turbine project development process, which generally takes place in the United States of America, Europe and Asia, prototypes are first developed and used in the certification process by competent international bodies. Then, these projects are adapted to meet the specific characteristics of the target markets. In Brazil in addition to meeting local content requirements, there is a need to meet local environmental conditions, through “Tropicalization”. In the specific case of Tropicalization of Wind Turbines, regionalized local environmental conditions are considered and not the specific conditions of the location where they will be installed. Therefore, the definition of parameters and adjustments of protections and systems tends to be the same, regardless of the location of the Wind Generators, as well as maintenance planning. This work aims to present a proposal for a failure analysis methodology, not yet used in the World Wind Sector, which, through computer simulations using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, will correlate the local environmental characteristics of the installation with the protection actions in the Wind Generators, proactively determining the main failure modes. Then, using the Specialist's Natural Intelligence, it will be determined which failure modes are not coherent, guiding the most appropriate planning of equipment intervention and adjustments to protections, thus increasing Wind Turbine’s operational reliability and system performance. The methodology presented here will be applied in real cases in the Wind Turbines in a Wind Complex located in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and two located in the State of Ceará, aiming for validation. As a benefit of this methodology, the Operator will be able to adjust the systems to reduce the number of stops and the maintenance plan, providing a gain in global availability of the Wind Complexes, in accordance with the Entrepreneur's vision, following the concept of availability according to with ABNT NBR 5462 (1994): “capacity of the item to perform its function”.
