SUMMARY:

The substantial increment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in current distribution grids is replacing a relevant portion of Conventional Generation (CG), which poses new challenges in planning and operation of distribution grids. Numerous studies considered the operation of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with coordination of RES such as Photovoltaic Energy (PV) and Wind Power Generation (WPG). A Multi-period Optimal Power Flow (MOPF) is considered a non-linear, non-convex, large-scale problem involving discrete (places) and continuous variables (operation of the system and the BESS). These attributes make it challenging the planning and operation to solve by approximate or exact methods. To account for the intermittent behavior of RES this thesis proposes a MOPF model for the optimal operation of BESSs with PV, WPG, and CG in modern distribution networks. As a result, three papers have been presented in (a) a MOPF model for the optimal coordination of BESS with PV, WPG and CG, (b) a MOPF model for optimal allocation and operation of BESS with PV, and (c) a MOPF model to support the voltage profile considering BESS and high penetration of PV generators. The proposed model is developed in A Modeling Language for Mathematical Programming (AMPL) and solved through the Knitro solver within a time horizon of 24 hours aiming to reduce active power losses and improve the voltage profile, tests are carried out on 33-bus and a real distribution grid of 141-bus from Caracas. Future studies will consider the optimal placement of RES and coordination with BESSs using the hybridization between Metaheuristics (MT-H) and mathematical programming.
