This dissertation reconstructs the philosophical formation of Paul Deussen (1845–1919), taking
as its central problem the process through which initially dispersed interests — theology,
classical philology, historical criticism, Sanskrit, philosophy, and teaching — were gradually
brought into relation and transformed into a coherent philosophical standpoint. Rather than
beginning with Deussen’s mature system and projecting it retrospectively onto his youth, the
investigation adopts a genetic, historical-philosophical approach: it follows problems, methods,
intellectual encounters, and biographical decisions as they became available for new
appropriations, distinguishing possibility, availability, and actual realization. The principal
chronological scope extends from Deussen’s childhood to his departure from Aachen in 1879;
an epilogue selectively follows the later realization of the vocation that had by then taken shape.
The reconstruction draws primarily on Deussen’s correspondence with Friedrich Nietzsche,
his autobiographical and philosophical writings, school and university documents, the
contemporary press, and archival material. The dissertation shows that Deussen’s search for
foundation, coherence, and mediation preceded his systematic adherence to Schopenhauer, and
that the basic intellectual orientation of his thought was already present before his systematic
appropriation of Schopenhauer’s philosophy. His subsequent development can therefore be
understood as a process of appropriation and mediation through which heterogeneous elements
were progressively integrated into a more determinate philosophical orientation, culminating
in Indian philosophy as his principal field of specialization. Finally, the dissertation argues that
Deussen’s philosophical individuality manifests itself precisely in this capacity to confer unity
upon diverse traditions, methods, and experiences without entirely effacing their differences.
