SUMMARY:

Although prohibitionism is still hegemonic in the debate about drugs, it is evident that alternative models that question its effectiveness are emerging more and more frequently. This text seeks to understand how these models are adopted. To do so, it discusses the prohibitionist antecedents and the current legislation through a multiple case study. Specifically, it uses important concepts on the theme to carry out an investigative approach to the process of legalization of marijuana, describing the different models of legalization through a perspective that highlights common points between these models, without neglecting, however, their specificities of implementation. Thus, this text produces a useful comparative field for the analysis of these policies.
