TITLE:

THE APPLICATION OF INDUSTRY 4.0 IN THE FOOD SECTOR: AN INDUSTRY MATURITY FRAMEWORK

PAGES: 75
BIG AREA: Engenharias
AREA: Engenharia de Produção
SUBÁREA: Gerência de Produção
SUMMARY:

Industry 4.0 has been widely discussed since it was declared one of the main initiatives for high-tech strategies in Germany in 2011. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, technological advancements have significantly impacted the productivity of industries, increasing mass production. Currently, Industry 4.0 represents a new cycle of technological innovations and is described as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as transformations have moved beyond incremental changes, and connected systems have become fundamental throughout the value chain, as increased productivity affects the economy, industrial growth, and the workforce, consequently altering the competitiveness of companies, regions, and the markets in which they operate. As industries worldwide embrace automation alongside enabling technologies, understanding the maturity levels of these technologies becomes essential for effective implementation and optimization. Industry 4.0 is not just about digitization or automation; it refers to the integration of information and communication technology into industrial production, coupled with the transformation of the organization and culture of companies. Extensive planning is required for the physical, technological, and organizational transformations necessary for manufacturing industries to adapt and navigate the complex landscape of Industry 4.0, fostering innovation and competitiveness. Therefore, this work explores critical aspects of the digitalization process in manufacturing from the perspectives of technical requirements and strategic demands, offering an analysis of key enabling technologies and their respective maturity models as it sheds light on the progression from initial adoption to advanced integration, enabling the identification of the maturity level of Industry 4.0 implementation in companies, intending to develop an agile and continuously improving environment for rapid decision-making, adaptability, and competitiveness in disruptive environments. Furthermore, the adoption of new Industry 4.0 technologies offers new opportunities for emerging countries, which concentrate production capacity for both low-value-added and more complex goods. The need to utilize industrial capacity in mature economies drives the development of productive skills and innovation. In countries like Brazil, measures are still needed to implement available Industry 4.0 technologies and increase investments in research and development to compete at international levels. In an era where customized, data-driven, and automated processes are becoming increasingly vital, this work also discusses the food industry, which stands to gain significantly from adopting Industry 4.0 principles, enhancing efficiency, quality, and sustainability throughout its production and distribution chain. The food sector is particularly relevant as this industrial revolution is driving significant changes across the entire chain. Based on the information gathered about the current scenario, a strategic approach to implementation is crucial, emphasizing a phased deployment that targets specific regions and imparts knowledge to key individuals. Consequently, a framework that conceptualizes the requisite measures and actions taken by food manufacturers in navigating the digital transformation process for Industry 4.0 aims to identify the minimum technical requirements for a manufacturing plant to be considered aligned with the principles of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and analyze the maturity levels of Industry 4.0 in the food sector, as well as the feasibility of its application and development in the current national context.
