SUMMARY:

Considering the potential of supply chain 4.0 (SC4.0) to generate competitive advantage, and that there are few studies in the area, it is important that it be investigated. The objective of this study is to evaluate the association between the use of digital technologies in SC and their respective financial, operational and sustainable performance, as well as the moderating effect of the sector, tier level and sector technology intensity on such relationships. Thus, a sample of 46 leading Brazilian companies from different sectors was defined and, based on a literature review, indicators of the use of digital technologies in SC, demographic characteristics of companies and financial, operational, environmental and social performances. Such data were collected through free access online reports and financial statements and sustainability reports published on the companies' websites. With the data in hand, factors of use of digital technologies by companies were extracted through factor analysis. Then, to test the elaborated hypotheses, a three-level hierarchical regression was performed. In the theoretical field, the results revealed four groups of digital technologies: Dimension of Integration and Data Analysis; Dimension of Automation and Data Monitoring; Dimension of Human-Machine Interaction and Mobile Applications; and Dimension of Additive Manufacturing and Collaborative Robotics. Only the first group is statistically associated with improved financial performance, the second and third with operational performance, the second with environmental performance, and none with social performance. In addition, it was found that there are significant differences in performance for different sectors, the tier layer does not influence the impact of the use of digital technologies on performance, and companies in sectors of high technological intensity obtain greater performance with the use of digital technologies. In the practical field, these results help professionals in the field to prioritize groups of digital technologies for implementation and internal training, according to the desired performance.
