SUMMARY:

Industry 4.0 is steadily being implemented, factories and universities are demanding more resources to evolve from manual production to the application of new technologies. Increasing complexity between elements in a production system requires the application of innovative approaches, and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) addresses inherent system complexities with a model-centric approach that supports and improves technical systems using multidisciplinary methods, which include modeling languages and tools to increase production quality and optimize procedures. Objective – This work aims to analyze the use of MBSE in manufacturing systems, identify possible applications in process optimization and demonstrate challenges and benefits comparing to the classic document-based approach from a case study, a Learning Factory that demonstrates a real manufacturing environment for research, teaching and demonstration of Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies that uses a skateboard as an example product. Methodology – In order to fulfill these objectives, this work was based on the principles of Design Science Research, using the methods of Systematic Literature Review and SysML graphic modeling, applying the disciplines of Systems Engineering. Partial and expected results – The model presented captures relevant aspects of the system design based on the analysis of scenarios and defines the externally observable behavior of the system and the physical characteristics, presents the starting point of identifying user needs and system designers. It is expected to elucidate systems paradigms through a formalized, centralized and single source of truth as a central form of description for change management. Conclusion – Considering Learning Factories interacts with several students and researchers, and many projects are carried out using this facility, MBSE has been proving to be an approach that helps in the rapid identification of impacts of change requests to Learning Factories, allows the multi-person collaboration for future research, making it easy to track system requirements.
