RESUMO:

Nowadays, humankind cope with unprecedented social, environmental, and economic challenges, that can be faced by the commitment of countries, institutions, and individuals to the sustainable development (SD). SD can be translated by the Agenda 2030, that presents a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity through the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Higher education institutions (HEIs) have great potential to help society to achieve these goals, which are part of these institutions’ activities since the conception of their strategic planning. This study aims to verify how HEIs address the SD in their strategic planning through a content analysis of the Institutional Development Plans (IDPs) from Brazilian federal public universities performed in two steps. In the first step of the content analysis, parts of the IDPs related to each SDG will be identified and, in the second step, the main elements to each SDG will be identified from set of extracts selected in step 1. With that, this work hopes to create a diagnostic of the universities’ commitment to the SD in their strategic planning and the main actions taken by these HEIs to each SDG.
