RESUMO:

The work intends to analyze the development of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) as an attempt at regional integration in South America which, like several other initiatives in the region, was exhausted, coming to an end after ten years of activity. In a multipolar world, integration and cooperation agreements are a means of survival, international insertion and of gaining relative advantages. The search for the integration of the region is not a recent desire, in this trajectory, several projects that preceded UNASUR were developed and many were not sustained. Considering the complexity of the South American region, UNASUR emerged as a regional integration initiative with cooperation objectives at different levels.

To understand the context of the birth of UNASUR, the work approaches the history in Latin America and South America in integrationist projects. Then, in order to understand the period in which the bloc lasted and its decay, the work addresses the political, economic and geopolitical circumstances in which UNASUR was inserted. In this sense, we also approach actors interested in the region's integrationist processes, Brazil as the largest and most influential country in the region with great responsibilities in the bloc, and the United States of America, which seeks to maintain its influence in the region. From the historical presentation, elements that contributed to the recent dismantling of UNASUR will be identified. The integration of the region is considered a common objective among the states of the subcontinent and, in the case of Brazil, it is still a constitutional objective. Thus, for its consolidation, it must be elaborated as a State policy by its member countries.

We then investigated, in addition to the bloc's intrinsic elements, the political and ideological changes in the region that interfered with the development of regional integration and at what level they contributed to the dismantling of UNASUR.
