PCN vs. BNCC: WHAT HAS CHANGED IN TERMS OF THE DISCOURSE ON THE REPRESENTATION OF BODIES AND APPROACHES TO SEXUALITY IN SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS?

PAGES: 80
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Educação
SUMMARY:

There is no neutrality in ideological positions; therefore, the textbook influences school culture, curriculum implementation, and teaching practices, as it is the primary instructional resource available in the classroom. Societal standards are reflected and maintained in schools, where individuals with various types of bodies (gender, race, disability, age), social classes, and hierarchical positions coexist. On the other hand, bodies are represented in textbooks following a certain "universal" pattern, as if everyone had the same characteristics, disregarding the representativeness of the individual diversity of each body. It seems necessary to discuss how the human body has been represented by Biology/Science and how this may be related to processes of school (and social) exclusion. In this perspective, with the change in educational documents, the overcoming of the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN), and the introduction of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), questions arise about how bodies and the approach to sexuality are represented in new textbooks and what changes have occurred. The aim of this study is to analyze the discourse present in images of human bodies and approaches to sexuality found in Science textbooks for the 7th grade/8th year of Elementary School, which were part of the National Textbook Program (PNLD) in four different periods (2008, 2011, 2014, and 2020), making comparisons, especially regarding the representation of human bodies and ideas of norm and difference. Our study is based on the ideas of Guacira Lopes Louro, which are grounded in the studies of Michel Foucault, to discuss sexuality, corporeality, norm, and difference in bodies. This research is configured as qualitative and documentary, with data discussed through Discourse Analysis (DA). We perceive a greater representation of diversified bodies in the textbooks approved in the latest PNLD (2020), with the presence of black bodies, individuals with disabilities, elderly people, and the representation of various family formations, while still persisting some patterns related to biology, such as genital organs, puberty changes, and pregnancy. We consider that one of the reasons for this major change in the textbook may be related to a very generic BNCC skill, allowing for various approaches. Additionally, this new document is mandatory and no longer just guiding, as the PCNs were. However, we assume that achievements for rights and the representation of minorities come with much societal struggle, pressure, and numerous laws and public policies implemented in recent years for minority equity. Therefore, we understand that the skill of the BNCC was a consequence of this struggle, not the other way around. This work is still in progress with the intention of contributing to textbooks being more representative of the various real bodies existing in society, assuming a stance of overcoming prejudiced and normative views, constructing other discourses where it is not necessary to differentiate between the normal and the abnormal.
