University extension at Lagoa do Sino campus of the Federal University of São Carlos
University extension represents the crucial integration between research and teaching, enriching professional training and providing a deeper understanding of reality beyond the university's boundaries, establishing a direct connection with the surrounding environment. Despite its importance in integrating knowledge and fostering interaction between the academic community and the region, it is often observed that extension assumes an undefined role in higher education institutions, lacking a unified approach and neglecting the specificities of local contexts. The absence of a clear purpose capable of sustaining continuity in extension activities sometimes results in a fragmented practice, where actions occur in isolation, culminating in a relationship devoid of meaning for the regional community. Thus, in many Brazilian universities, the knowledge produced is still predominantly linked to teaching and research, disconnected from social needs and everyday life. Although the university has various contributions to offer to society, it is imperative to recognize that society also holds valuable knowledge to share, and this exchange of knowledge is only possible through extension. In the face of this scenario, this research examined extension at a specific campus of the Federal University of São Carlos, the Lagoa do Sino campus. Inaugurated in 2014, this campus is located in a predominantly agricultural region characterized by one of the lowest Human Development Indexes in the state of São Paulo, with its construction made possible through a donation of a farm. This donation occurred based on the university's commitment to society and the region, reinforced through extension activities. Thus, this study aimed to understand how extension develops on a campus with these particularities. For this purpose, a documentary analysis of documents related to institutional development, campus implementation, management reports, records of extension actions, among others, was conducted. In addition, interviews were conducted with five collaborators holding different positions, including a participant involved in the campus creation process. The contents of these interviews were analyzed through categorical content analysis, combined with the evaluation of documents relevant to the research objectives. The results indicate that university extension at the Lagoa do Sino campus has manifested itself in a unique way since its creation. Despite some areas for improvement, the campus stands out for conceiving and implementing extension as a fundamental pillar of the university, valuing the popular layers, understanding regional vulnerabilities, and seeking, in various ways, to progress as a public educational institution committed to its surroundings.
