TITLE:

THE DIALOGUE IN MATHEMATICAL MODELLING PRACTICES IN THE EARLY YEARS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:
manifestations and contributions to student's education

PAGES: 120
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Educação
SUBÁREA: Ensino-Aprendizagem
SUMMARY:

The general theme of this research was  the  dialogue in Mathematical Modelling practices in the early years of Elementary School. The context of this study was a 5th grade elementary school classroom in which a Modelling practice was developed focusing on the theme “Air Pollution”. The research has a qualitative nature and has the following goals: identify and characterize dialogue moments in the Mathematical Modelling practice in the early years of Elementary School; identify contributions of these dialogue practices into the student’s training. The theoretical references are Mathematical Modelling, Critic Math Education and dialogue in education. The data includes: video and audio records, field notebook notes, student’s productions and a survey answered by the participants. The data were analyzed according to two axes, elaborated based on the goals of the research. To this end, different forms of dialogue manifestation were evidenced in the practices carried out, characterizing these dialogues according to the Investigative Cooperation Model. Elements that can be indications of contributions to the formation of students and that concern the development of their potentialities were also identified in the practices. The results indicate that the participation of the students in the development of the project stimulated the dialogue between the participants, favoring the appearance of qualities of the dialogue, according to the Model of Investigative Cooperation, and consequently favoring learning. There are also indications that dialogical practices in Modeling can contribute to the formation of students by stimulating initiative in learning, initiative and autonomy in the search for solutions, ability to use mathematics to understand reality, ability to use mathematics to reflect and to position themselves critically, ability to dialogue, confidence to communicate ideas, confidence and autonomy to make decisions and development of citizenship.
