SCIENCE COMMUNICATION PRODUCED BY SCIENTIST IN SOCIAL MEDIAS: ASPIRATIONS AND ADVERSITIES

PAGES: 80
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Divulgação Científica
SUMMARY:

In the realm of science communication, there is an ongoing debate about who is its author, its actor and how it should be done. In Brazil, science communicators do not receive formal recognition for their craft, nor is there specific legislation defining the requirements for professional practice in this field, along with guarantees. There are those who advocates that scientists themselves should be the protagonists of their own communication. Therefore, they would be the first to communicate their own research over which their activity lies, acting as the foundation for other professionals, such as scientific journalists, to widely spread their research results. In other perspective, there are concerns that scientists might lack the necessary communication skills, which may allow them to successfully transmit their processes and findings. On that account, declarations such as these have the potential to undermine the trustworthiness of their statements. The consensus about the role of scientific journalism, conducted by professionals from outside the scientific field, such as journalists, also raises questions. It is unclear which misconceptions might be present in the transposition from a specific content to the lay public. Recent research suggests that social media is an environment largely unexplored, both in terms of content and impact. Both public and private organisations, including universities and research institutes, have profiles on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and some have YouTube channels. They cite advantages such as the closer connections between the researchers and the research centres, delivering topics and information with a broader reach, without the assessment of traditional communication vehicles, such as journalistic editorials and magazines. Under these considerations, this study aims to examine science communication efforts made by scientists who utilise social media as their field of action. It also seeks to understand their aspirations, the adversities they found on their journey to achievement, and the metrics they use to measure success.
