Nurturing with biodiversity: proposed didactic transposition to promote knowledge about food plants

We live in a critical moment in the history of Planet Earth, marked by anthropic actions that have negatively impacted biodiversity, and many of these actions have irrevocable and irreversible effects on the rich Brazilian biodiversity.One of the ways to preserve biodiversity is through education for biodiversity, however, to do so, it is necessary to think not only of organisms considered charismatic and attractive, but also in organisms that are mistakenly considered non-living beings such as plants. Therefore, in order to promote a more contextualized teaching of botany, and an education for biodiversity in an integrative perspective, the objective for this research was to carry out a didactic transposition of research data on biodiversity related to food plants and investigate: 1) how this didactic proposal is accepted by teachers and students; and 2) how it can influence students’ interest and knowledge. In view of the objective, a mixed methodological approach was used with qualitative approaches through semi-structured interviews and quantitative ones through closed questionnaires on a four-point Likert scale. To this end, 45 students aged 11 to 14 years and 4 science teachers from schools located in the Baixada Santista/SP region participated in the research. For the construction of the didactic material called “Is it bush, plant or food?” we used references such as Chevallard (1991), Clément (2006) and Lombard and Weiss (2018). We also elaborated the material based on responses obtained from interviews with teachers and students, and to contemplate the suggestions of these participants of the elements and content that should have in a material about food plants, we made use of the Nature of Science, investigative activities and an evolutionary approach. As main results, it was verified an interest of the students in aspects related to the utilitarian value of the biodiversity.  We also noticed a greater interest of the girls, in the initial questionnaire, of items related to nutritional values of food plants that prevent diseases, we believe that this happened due to aspects of aesthetics and beauty related to caring as a female task. Concerning to knowledge, we noticed a limited knowledge of Brazilian flora with food potential, especially, of vegetable compared to fruits. Açai was the best know native fruit and we believe this is due to the wide commercialization of the product. On the other hand, the species present in the didactic material elaborated: batata-crem (Tropaeolum pentaphyllum), bertalha-coração (Anredera cordifolia) e taioba (Xanthosoma sp) were not known by the students. In a nutshell, this research reveals four great learnings: (I) from the interests and knowledge of the students , the contents and didactic materials must be thought and not the other way around, as demonstrated in article II; (II) the voice of students and teachers plays an extremely important role in the elaboration and implementation of didactic materials; (III) students’interest in the utilitarian/instrumental value of biodiversity can be used as a starting point to encourage other biodiversity values and; (IV) uniting biodiversity education with health education can be a way to encourage students to teach Botany.
