Considering the periodization of Brazilian pedagogical ideas proposed by Dermeval Saviani, this work analyzes the textbook 'Noções de Chimica Geral', written by João Martins Teixeira and published in 1875 - therefore, in the period of coexistence between the religious and secular aspects of traditional pedagogy . In light of the characteristics assumed by Brazilian educational practice in that period, and the peculiarities of the didactic editions published and/or used at the time, the work places Teixeira's work in the broader context of the development of chemistry and its teaching in Brazil. From categories already indicated in the literature (philosophical influences, role relegated to experimentation, presentation of chemistry as a science under construction), the content analysis of the book 'Noções de Chimica Geral' was carried out, using categorical analysis techniques and thematic. The Historical Section that closes the book, with contributions to the historiography (of teaching) of chemistry in Brazil, was also analysed.
