The Lagoa do Sino campus of the federal University of São Carlos: university extension as a promise of regional development

SUMMARY:

University extension is the integration of research and teaching, which enables the enrichment of professional training, and knowledge of reality beyond the university walls, having direct contact with the environment in which it is inserted. Despite its immense importance in integrating knowledge and providing the relationship between the acadềmic and regional community, most of the time the extension occupies an undefined role in universities, without a unified formation, not taking into account the singularities of the places where universities are inserted. Without a clear purpose that can establish some continuity in their activities, the practice of extension ends up being an action for an action, or rather, doing for doing, which results in a relationship without any meaning for the regional community. In this way, in a large part of the universities in Brazil, knowledge is still produced that is much more linked to teaching and research than to extension; that is, knowledge that is disconnected from the needs of society and daily life. It is a fact that the university has several contributions to make to society; however, society can also offer several contributions to the university, and this exchange of knowledge is only possible through extension. Thus, given the important and indispensable role that extension plays in various nuances, and according to the problems presented, this research proposes to analyze the extension on a campus of the Federal University of São Carlos. Opened in 2014, the campus Lagoa do Sino is located in an essentially agricultural region, with one of the lowest Human Development Indexes, and its construction took place on a farm that was donated. This donation was made possible through a commitment of the university to society and the region in which it is located, reinforcing this commitment through extension activities. Thus, the goal is to understand how extension takes place in a campus with these specificities. To answer these questions, a documental analysis of the Implementation Plans of the Lagoa do Sino campus and the Institutional Development Plan was done. In addition, we interviewed 3 employees who hold different positions in the campus, investigating the contents coming from these interviews and developing analysis categories. With the research still under development, the present results point to a strong theoretical and practical alignment of the extensionist proposals on the Lagoa do Sino campus, dialoguing with the objectives of the campus implementation and concepts of university extension.
