THE INFLUENCE OF THE MODERN MATHEMATICS MOVIMENT IN A GROUP OF SMALL TOWNS IN INTERIOR OF BAHIA (1960-1980)
The Modern Mathematics Movement (MMM), how it became internationally known, represented the efforts to renew the teaching of Mathematics that had been the subject of debate since the beginning of the 20th century. In Brazil, its gained prominence, especially in some capitals of the country, in the 1960s and 1970s, and intended to bring Basic Education closer to Higher Education. For this, it had the articulation and support of countless professor and researchers who, through debates, production of materials and their performances, as teachers, contributed to the propagation and dissemination of MMM ideals in the interior of the country. Research carried out in recent years has sought to understand how this process took place and its implications for Teaching of Mathematics and its History. In order to contribute to this current and relevant debate, I present, in this thesis, the synthesis of the research that I developed in the last years and that had as main objective the historically investigate how the process of reception and appropriation of the MMM ideals in a set of small towns in the interior of Bahia between the 1960s and 1980s. In particular, I considered it important to delve into the impacts brought by the MMM on teaching practices and school culture. For this I took as a theoretical-methodological contribution concepts from Cultural History, as elaborated by Roger Chartier (2002b), in particular, the concepts of representation and appropriation. The works of André Chervel (1990) also as a reference for me, which deals with the study of the History of School Subjects and of Dominique Julia (2001) about the School Culture. Regarding the sources, official documents, pedagogical and didactic materials were considered in addition to the interviews. The reflections produced from the analysis of these sources and the articulation of the references it was possible to identify, among other things, that didactic books had a considerable role in the process of reception and appropriation, on the part of the teachers, of the proposals of MMM.
