Biodiversity in teaching materials and teachers' opinions: possibilities for Biota Educação

ÁREA: Educação
RESUMO:

Biodiversity refers to all the variety of living creatures, involving quantity of species, genetic variety and including also several relations among living beings. This is an important theme in science and it is also present in Biology and Science Teaching. Furthermore, the science textbooks in the school culture are regarded as an important guiding of the contents used, since it is quite consulted by teachers and students in Basic Teaching. Hence, the science textbooks have been constantly target by research in order to comprehend how their contents are presented. The aim of this research is: 1) to comprehend how the Biodiversity teaching currently occurs in the textbooks used by students in public schools from São Paulo State (Brazil); 2) comprehend what are the needs of didatization that may provide aids to implement new textbooks focused on biodiversity from data offered by Biota Fapesp Program. In order to achieve it, an analysis from textbooks distributed by National Program of Textbooks (PNLD) (2017-2019) were made in two textbooks (state and town), and also interviews were implemented with teachers working in the final years of elementary school. The selection criteria for the textbooks and participants were stablished considering the research context of Biodiversity Regular Project in the textbooks and the conceptions and interests from young people: reflections for the Biota-education (Process number 2018/2175-6), that aims to contribute for a wider Thematic Project: “The program Biota-FAPESP in the basic education: possibilities to integrate curriculum” (Process number 2016/05843-4). In this regular project were selected ten schools distributed by São Paulo State based on the following criteria: the distance and proximity from regions of Atlantic forest and Brazilian tropical savanna, as well as the coast; and the grade obtained in Basic Education Development Index (IDEB 2017). Therefore, those textbooks were analyzed and those teachers were interviewed. The textbook analysis included criteria such as the comprehension of the general composition of the biological diversity presented, its relation to the biomes, aspects associated with the extinction, preservation and conservation of the environment, as well as the presence of the scientific knowledge production about biodiversity. On the other hand, the teachers had questions about their impressions related to the textbooks used and about what the teachers regarded important for the biodiversity teaching. The data were analyzed using the elements of the qualitative data analysis methodology described by Marshall and Rossman (2006) and the content analysis by Bardin (2011). The partial results of the textbooks analysis corroborated with the impressions described by the teachers led to: a greater focus on the cognition of the species in certain animals rather than in plants, for instance; the lack of association between the content presented and students experience; the shortage of the mention of relation between the human action and the species extinction, as well as the strategies to conservation and preservation; and information scarcity and lack of examples about the formulation of the scientific knowledge about biodiversity. Thus, one must consider the importance of new textbooks to focus on the elements still scarcely mentioned in the textbooks presented in schools and approaching, for example, the biodiversity associated with their respective biomes, creating an association between the local environmental problems and clarifying possible solutions through public policies. Moreover, by using the data from Biota-Fapesp Program, one may elaborate textbooks that aid students to comprehend how the scientific knowledge about biodiversity is formulated.
