ANALYSIS OF CONTENTS ABOUT ALGAE IN PEDAGOGICAL PROJECTS OF TEACHER TRAINING COURSES IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES IN BRAZILIAN PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS

The teaching of the contents associated with Phycology is related to innumerable questions that lead to the chaining of the concept of "Algae". With this in mind, we materialized this research from the survey and analysis of the Pedagogical Course Projects (PPCs) of Higher Education Institutions - HEIs in Brazil, in initial training courses for biology teachers, specifically in Biological Sciences undergraduate, focusing on disciplines that address content about "Algae". We sought to analyze such curricular contents, searching to know the discussions that the disciplines are promoting on "Algae". The collection and treatment of data took place from the search for the PPCs of the HEIs, according to the assumptions of the qualitative document analysis, selected from the assessment made by INEP, called CPC - Preliminary Course Concept, which is held annually. The CPC meets several requirements for assigning a score ranging from 0.0 to 5.0. We selected HEIs that are located in both coastal and non-coastal regions, with 4 for each region of the country, between 2 on the coast and two off the coast, and 4 representatives from the Midwest Region, one from each state, since that region does not have a coastal area. The study considered: 1) the year of the PPCs, associated with the years of restructuring and related to the internal and external evaluations of the institutions, 2) the different nomenclatures given to the disciplines, 3) the workload of theoretical and practical activities, 4) the classification and "Algae" approach, 5) the didactic strategies used, 6) the bibliographic list of books, articles and their respective years of publication. It was observed that many PPCs were published more than 3 years ago, which indicates that there was no recent restructuring of them. The vast majority of disciplines showed in their names and menus a view of “algae” as an unnatural group (mainly with the use of the term “cryptogams”), with few disciplines presenting a phylogenetic and representative approach to kinship relations currently accepted for algae groups. The focus on the disciplines was mainly on evolution, diversity, ecology and morphology. The economic importance of algae has also emerged, but less evident than other approaches. Some HEIs presented specific disciplines on algae (Phycology). The general workload and the separation between theoretical and practical work was also quite variable between HEIs, showing the autonomy of institutions in defining their curricula. However, some menus and teaching plans did not make explicit the separation between the hours of theoretical and practical activities, which we consider a negative aspect. The didactic strategies emphasized “Talking” and “Doing”, being quite diversified among the HEIs studied. Finally, many books used in the disciplines' bibliographies are prior to 1999 and there are few scientific articles being used as a reference, which is worrying since the knowledge about the evolution of algae groups is quite recent (from 2009 with the discovery mechanisms of evolution of plastids through endosymbiosis) and are not yet present in textbooks. Therefore, we suggest here that the training of future biology teachers may improve in the sense of being more consistent with current academic knowledge, which, consequently, may lead to the production of didactic materials that are also more up-to-date than those we have today. As a suggestion for future studies, it would be important to conduct interviews with the professors responsible for these subjects in the analyzed HEIs so that some aspects not explicit in the analyzed documents can be better explored.
