'Noções de Chimica Geral' ('Notions of General Chemistry'), by João Martins Teixeira: historical contributions
Considering the periods of Brazilian pedagogical ideas proposed by Dermeval Saviani, this work analyzes the textbook 'Noções de Chimica Geral', written by João Martins Teixeira and initially published in 1875 - therefore, in the period of coexistence between the religious and secular trends of traditional pedagogy. In light of the characteristics assumed by Brazilian educational practice in this period, and the peculiarities of the textbooks published and/or used at the time, the dissertation places Teixeira's work in the broader context of the development of chemistry and its teaching in Brazil. From categories already indicated in the literature (influence of positivism, role relegated to experimentation, character of the images presented and approach of chemistry as a science under construction), the content analysis of the book 'Noções de Chimica Geral' will be carried out, using to categorical and thematic analysis techniques. So far, more than 100 units of analysis have been found throughout the approximately 400 pages that make up the work.
