RESUMO:

This study converses with the research line History of Science and Mathematics and interfaces with Education, of the postgraduate course in Teaching and History of Science and Mathematics from Federal University of ABC, under the guidance of Professor Doctor Ana Maria Dietrich (UFABC) and co-supervision of Professor Doctor Geovanni Gomes Cabral (UNIFESSPA). The issue of violence in today's society is alarming. A great amount of national researchers, such as Marilia Pontes Sposito, and international researchers like Robert Muchembled, focus on the issue of violence and school violence. Up to this date, the only hypothesis shared by them is that violence happens mostly among young male. Some of the causes of violence are the social inequalities caused by neoliberal capitalism. These are aggravated by the excessive concentration of income in the hands of the bourgeois and the exploitation of workers' labor. This neoliberal society is normative and makes social conflicts increasingly show themselves in the form of racism, sexism, misogyny, feminicide, homophobia, ethnic/religious rivalries, xenophobia and ultra-nationalism. This thesis understands that a school is a microcosm of current society. The population, the media and school violence researchers indicate the elementary school itself as the place where it is possible to minimize violence by teaching about Human Rights. If the school really is this kind of place, how should we deal with the problem of violence that is reproduced within it? Are teachers and the entire school community prepared to find solutions for that? Are students willing to learn about Human Rights? Do the speeches from teachers and community match their day-to-day practices in Human Rights? In the face of these questions, the purpose of this study is mapping violence in public state schools through a survey conducted by questionnaire. Ten schools of the city of São Bernardo do Campo were chosen based on previously established criteria. After analyzing the data obtained from field research, we will answer to the following questions: Is violence linked to poverty? Does violence influence academic performance? Is Human Rights Education able to minimize school violence? The result will also bring elements to create projects in order to minimize the violence in schools and its community based on Human Rights Education.
