A CASE STUDY ON DISTRIBUTION OF SCIENTIFIC CAPITAL AND IMPLICATIONS BEFORE INSTITUTIONAL ACTIONS IN SCIENCE TEACHING AT THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF ABC
Using Sociology of Science and the concepts of field, habitus and capitals from Pierre Bourdieu theory, this work aims to study the social space of the Federal University of ABC in order to try to understand to what extent (or not), if there is a relationship between instances of power (Rectory and Pro-Rectory) regarding the implementation of institutional proposals, such as Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Courses. The object of study of this work is the university subfield of the Federal University of ABC, which has 743 agents. For the analysis of these agents, it was decided to dedicate the debate around the symbolic capital: the scientific capital. In addition, it was taken into account that scientific capital can acquire characteristics of political power, scientific prestige, scientific power and university power. The relationship between scientific capital and university capital was evident, so that the more scientific capital accumulation occurs, more likely university capital occurs. The current group of agents that are in instances of power and also have high university power (Rectors and Pro-Rectors) are at similar level of accumulation of scientific capital in comparison with the rest of the agents of the institution. Is should be noted that this approach to scientific capital led these agents to use other strategies to maintain university power and their respective position in the subfield. In this case, the creation of the undergraduate course is a strategy to keep high position.
