The reflection on the challenge of developing a culture of sustainability at school highlights the relevance of Environmental Education (EA) in a transversal and permanent way in the pedagogical practices of basic education, as Brazilian legislation recommends since 1980. In this context, scientific education can be an ally in the search for a critical view of the relationship between society and the environment, and “citizen science” can be used as a school approach that allows students (citizens) to be brought closer to scientific literacy. One of the fundamental concepts in this process is sustainability, a current and frequent theme in environmental discussions around the world. The objective of this research, then, was to evaluate the concept of sustainability of basic education teachers and to verify if there was any change in it after participating in a continuing education course (in the outreach modality). To obtain these data, questionnaires were applied, containing closed questions, before after the training course and, for each question, a score was assigned, depending on the views expressed in the alternatives, which were classified as “Naive”. "Plausible" and "Adequate". The scores constituted what was called the attitudinal index. The questions represented the following dimensions: perception of the concept of sustainability, perception of sustainable attitudes in everyday life, at school, in the city, in the classroom and at home, as well as the perception of citizen science and the scientific method. The preliminary results of the questionnaires were compared by paired T test, which showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the attitudinal indices of the pre and the post-questionnaire, in most of the dimensions addressed regarding the concept. The study started from the hypothesis that there would be an increase in the global attitudinal index after the course, however, this non-significant statistical difference evidences a difficulty for the participants of the course to deconstruct the simplified concept of sustainability, as in the complex thinking theory of Edgar Morin. Therefore, if we intend for future citizens to understand the concept of sustainability and its dimensions, it is important to develop pedagogical strategies aimed at building this complexity already in the training of teachers.
