SUMMARY:

While recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) pose an unprecedented challenge to workers around the world, AI models are themselves products of human labor. Capital needs to incorporate the totality of the general intellect into such models for them to function competitively. This imperative renders traditional forms of labor subsumption ineffective. Free and open methods of innovation, often regarded as the gold standard for transparency in software development, function in this environment both as a tactic of resistance against big tech’s power and as a mechanism for subsuming this highly sophisticated labor. AI development, however, is fundamentally different from software development, posing unique challenges for these communities and challenging the common assumptions about transparency and ownership usually associated with free and open source software and licenses.
