COTREATMENT AND COAGULANTS ADDITION EFFECTS ON MBR MIXED LIQUOR ULTRAFILTRATION: FILTERABILITY, REMOVAL EFFICIENCY AND FOULING

PÁGINAS: 100
RESUMO:

Cotreatment of domestic wastewater and landfill leachate (LL) on membrane systems may be a great option for urban centers for water recovery and save resources, but it still needs studies, especially to assess its effectiveness and effects on membranes filterability and fouling. So, the main goal of this research was to analyze the effects of synthetic wastewater (sWW) and landfill leachate cotreatment and the addition of an inorganic (aluminum polychloride - PACl) and an organic (Tanfloc SG) coagulant on MBR mixed liquor (ML). Ultrafiltration experiments were conducted in four conditions: ML feed only with sWW, with sWW and landfill leachate (20% v/v) and this with PACl and with Tanfloc SG addition, both at 30mg L-1. Cotreatment reduced in 11% the Flux Recovery Rate (FRR), improved the participation of cake layer (in 18%) but also and more importantly the internal inorganic and irrecoverable ones (120%) on fouling resistance. Hermia models application also showed a lower linear square fitting and not a clear predominance of any fouling mechanism on cotreatment condition. Almost all pollutants removal efficiencies were harmed by LL addition, with the more significant impacts on COD, DOC and Abs 254nm (77%, 30% and 33% reduction, respectively). Both PACl and Tanfloc SG improved FRR (9% and 16%) and cake layer resistance (21% and 6%) and reduced the residual fouling (36% and 64%, respectively). The lower reduction of residual fouling with PACl addition is probably due to the more inorganic fouling characteristic and the complete pore blocking mechanism predominance identified by Hermia models application. Hermia models fitting in the first filtration hour were harmed with Tanfloc SG addition. Most of the pollutant removal efficiencies were improved with the addition of both coagulants, especially chemical oxygen demand (83% and 106%) and real color (57% and 68%, respectively). Dissolved nitrogen was almost zero on only cotreatment condition and achieved 27% and 32% with PACl and Tanfloc SG addition, respectively. So, cotreatment presented a harmed effect on filterability and on pollutants removal efficiencies and also increased the fouling rates. But Tanfloc SG addition improved filterability and pollutants removal efficiencies, even more than PACl addition, although it harmed the understanding of the fouling mechanisms involved during the first filtration hour. So, cotreatment with Tanfloc SG addition may be a viable option for urban centers.
