TITLE:

Covid-19  vs Politics and Polarization on Twitter

PAGES: 44
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Multidisciplinar
SUMMARY:

In the last three years, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the anti-vaccine movement has grown again, supported by conspiracy theories and false information, disseminated in different ways among the world's population.

In this context, the WHO classified it as an Infodemia, the large volume of information on the subject of the vaccine against Covid-1. Works analyzing polarization in social networks have been developed and published in the literature. Some of them focus on the pandemic period, discussing the spread of disinformation and lack of information about the vaccine .

This master's thesis proposes to identify and analyze the profile of the main polarizers who acted on Twitter on the issue of the vaccine against Covid-19, over 74 weeks that corresponds to the period from 08/12/2020 to 10/05/2022 .

To carry out such a study, a protocol described in this qualification monograph was developed and applied, using data collected by Observa - Observatório de Conflitos na Internet - UFABC. As a result, we obtained the classification of 204 users who acted more intensely, polarizing discussions on the social network and tweeted, in this period, on the topic of Covid-19.

We can observe that politicians represented the largest number of polarizers throughout this period, which indicates that the political issue and vaccination were confused. Another point to highlight is that the majority of polarizers have a right-wing political profile.

Throughout the analyzed weeks, the number of right or left polarizers alternated according to the relevant theme of the analyzed week.

We will also find that polarizers of the male gender have always been the majority and few times polarizers with a female profile took the lead in acting on Twitter as polarizers, the subject was directly linked to positive news about vaccination.

The monograph presents the protocol applied and the results and partial conclusions obtained so far
