RESUMO:

This work aimed the study of the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) during the thermal processing for energy recovery by combustion, of sugarcane bagasse mixed with municipal solid waste (MSW) in the form of refused derived fuel (RDF), processed in a laboratory-scale, fluidized bed combustion reactor. The study employed a batch of RDF produced by means of separation of the organic fraction from the mixed MSW collected in a local sanitary landfill, followed by physico-chemical characterization. This material, herein called RDF, was incorporated to the sugarcane bagasse in concentrations of 10 % and 15 % (weight) before being combusted. The thermal processing was done in a fluidized bed reactor with capacity for 5 kg/h and featured with a cyclone and a wet scrubber for retention of particulate matter and gas washing. The monitoring for dioxins and furans emissions was done in the flue gases and enployed the gas-chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry analytical technique (HRGCMS). The obtained data show that the incorporation of RDF resulted in a rising trend for the emissions of PCDDs/PCDFs, particulate matter and SO2 in the combustion gases. Despite the erratic behaviour of the results for dioxins and furans, it was possible to verify the impact of the RDF addition by looking at the homologue profile obtained in the different experiments, with two of them showing great influence of CuCl2 in the catalysis of de novo synthesis, which was the main formation mechanism observed. Regardless of the problems and difficulties encountered in the processing of the materials in the laboratory, the application of the mixture of sugarcane bagsse/RDF seems to be viable from the energetic and environmental point of view. Considering the formation and emission of pollutants, the mixture with 10 % RDF apeared to be more promissing, with less drastic alterations in the original parameters of the operation with 100 % bagasse.
