RESUMO:

The constantly growing generation of municipal solid wastes (MSW), coupled with the fact that in much of the national territory the disposal of this waste is still done in an environmentally inappropriate manner requires the adoption of different technological routes for an integrated management of MSW, that aims not only at the correct disposal of waste, but also at the recovery of materials that still have some value besides the generation of energy for waste that cannot be recovered. Pollutant formation is inevitable when it comes to thermal treatment of MSW and among the pollutants formed or transferred to the environmental compartments through this process the most interesting, from a toxicological perspective, are dioxins and furans. This work aims to study, on a laboratory scale, the impact of improved pre-separation levels on dioxin and furan emissions through thermal processing of MSW for energy recovery (incineration). The study will employ three types of waste (raw MSW; mechanical and biological treatment tailings - MBT and MSW Organic Fraction Digest), generated within the “RECICLOS” project, conducted by the Instituto de Pesquisas tecnológicas (IPT), from a sample population in Bertioga, coast of São Paulo. The thermal processing will be carried out in a 5 kg/h capacity fluidized bed combustion reactor equipped with a particulate material retention cyclone and a gas scrubber tower. The monitoring of dioxin and furan emissions will be done in both the gases emitted at the end of processing and in the ashes retained in the pollution control equipment and will employ the gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGCMS) technique. The test performed so far shows that there are many challenges involved in the use of intermediate scale equipment (neither bench nor pilot), as the one shown here. Several adjustments in the methodology are necessary in order to reach the ideal waste processing parameters and to obtain a representative sample to determine the analytes of interest. The next steps of the work aim to correct the identified problems and optimize the procedures, aiming at the conclusion of the tests and analysis of the results.
