Feminism South of the Border: The Role and Integration of Popular Feminism in the construction of the Latin American “women’s spring”
This work is based on the emergence of women's movements that oppose aspects of
the neoliberal advance, constituting major feminist demonstrations in the context of
the global south. Given the breadth of the term “Feminism of the South”, here,
specifically, the feminism that developed in Latin America and the Caribbean is taken,
with a focus on Brazil, Argentina and Chile, countries in which synchronous
movements of contestation took place, many of an alter-globalist nature, influencing
each other in the unfolding of the so-called “women's spring”, from 2015 to 2019. To
this end, we seek to know how the connections, specificities and agendas of a part of
Latin-American feminism are established. American, which has been read under the
label of “popular feminism”. The analysis came from influential organizations in the
region, such as the World March of Women and Ni Una Menos. From a
methodological point of view, analyzes were made of official publications of the
movements studied, found in periodicals, digital portals, in addition to their
manifestos. The aim was to reconstruct a feminist history of the South, its
connections and perspectives, in addition to conducting synchronous semi-structured
interviews or through forms with members of influential organizations in Latin
America. The intention was to put demands, positions and experiences into dialogue,
aiming to identify common traits and specificities that define Latin American
feminisms.
