SUMMARY:

The so-called Industry 4.0, also eventually defined as the Fourth Industrial Revolution,
Industrial Internet of Things, or Smart Manufacturing, has been approached in recent years as
involving many innovations in the fields of production, consumption, distribution and
management. The main technologies that comprise it include additive manufacturing, the
“internet of things” (IoT), digitalization, cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence, big data,
among others. Followed by faster rates of connectivity and information sharing, these changes
could be considered in many ways as qualitatively disruptive. In fact, there is no widely
accepted formalization about Industry 4.0 characteristics and its impacts. It is highlighted by
the literature, however, that this can bring changes in the employment structure, in the diffusion
of technical progress, in the dynamics of distribution and in economic growth. Thus, this work
aims to realize an exploratory-descriptive study of the Industry 4.0, followed by a postKeynesian
analysis of its nature and its economic impacts on income distribution, technical
progress and economic growth, considering the Post-Keynesian premises involving the
dynamics between the notions of effective demand, employment level and capital intensity.
Through a theoretical survey and an interpretation of the current researchers and critics,
combined with an analysis departing from the post-Keynesian tradition, the research verified
that indeed the so-called Industry 4.0 has the potential to increase productivity rates and growth.
Nevertheless, in distributive terms, it was also seen that an inclination towards income
polarization would be accentuated, due to growing wage disparities, as a result of growing use
of capital-intensive techniques. We argue then that this tendency could depress effective
demand and hinder balanced economic growth. These would be combined with qualitative
transformations in the aggregate output growth composition towards lower wages shares in the
GDP and higher disparities between firms, sectors and countries.
