SUMMARY:

During the second half of the 20th century, under the of the Cold War and marked by crises and
political effervescence across the globe, a religious movement that challenged and criticized
capitalism emerged in Latin America. It mobilized the clergy, lay people, activists and
academics. It was called Liberation Theology which, in its process of organization and
development, brought together a network of intellectuals who worked in different areas beyond
the theological sphere (philosophy, sociology, pedagogy, psychology, etc.). This conformed
what is nowconventionally called the Latin American Liberation Thought. Departing from this
process, the Ecumenical Department of Reasearches (DEI) was founded in San José in 1977,
Costa Rica, bringing together a group of theologians, economists, philosophers and social
scientists who sought to develop a theoretical production in the sphere of political economy. In
this sense, our research presentes and analyzes the particular features of the theoretical
production carried out within the scope of the DEI. We summarize and analyze the work of its
exponents, and propose an interpretative balance that results in the thesis that the relevant
contributions of the Department were mainly made within the scope of economic philosophy,
whose particular centrality lied on a process of secularization of the Liberation Theology, under
what we called the “theology-economics” axis. To this end, a chronological and diachronic
exposition was chosen, starting from the modernization process of the Catholic Church and the
historical roots of Liberation Theology, its relationship with the Theory of Dependency and the
connections between both which allowed the constitution of this theology-economics axis.
Then, the argument goes to the presentation of a key author for this passage from the theological
sphere to the economic sphere: the economist Franz Hinkelammert, highlighted for developing
the theoretical production that provided the general framework for the works carried out under
the “theology-economics” axis –outlining, in particular, the bases for the discussion on
economic rationality. After exposing the main contents developed in the Department from a
perspective that dates back to its foundation until the beginning of the 2000s, an interpretative
balance of the DEI's theoretical production is presented.
