The policies of Petrobras, 2012-2018: an analysis of their patterns and impacts
Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. is one of the largest companies in Brazil, holding most of its oil and derivatives market. Its investment actions, pricing policy, environmental orientation, among others, have a direct impact on the economic, social and political environment. The political transformations in Brazil between 2014 and 2018, particularly with the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and the administration of Michel Temer who succeeded her, had an impact on the company's management profile, through changes in its governing body. In light of this scenario, the policy changes from 2012 to 2018, including the administrations of Graça Foster, Aldemir Bendine (Dilma Rousseff government), and Pedro Parente and Ivan Monteiro (Michel Temer government) will be the object of this study in economic history which is made under a structuralist perspective. Our guiding questions will be (1): what were the most significant changes in the company's decisions during this period, and (2) what were their impacts on the results obtained by the company? The aim is to summarize and evaluate the most important actions and indicators of Petrobras in the period, with regard to the company's economic, financial and productive performance, also reporting events at the national and international level. The main indicators analyzed will refer to the sectorial pattern of the company's investments, its indebtedness profile -particularly in view of the variations of the dollar, the price of oil, and the impacts of the Lava-Jato operation-, the profile of contracting suppliers and labor, among other similar variables related to the company's performance. The social capital indicators will also be addressed, in order to understand who the company's shareholders are, what their variation over the period, as well as their level of appropriation of the company's dividends. The analysis of these data can contribute to an understanding of the role of the company's investments and decisions for the country in terms of its economic development, and, in a more localized sense, to stylize the changes in the profile of the company's decisions over the period.
