Nuestra America:
A study of the "political economy" of the São Paulo Forum
This research aims to analyze the “political economy” of the Foro de São Paulo. The Foro de São Paulo, an organization formed in 1990 by political parties and left-wing social movements in Latin America and the Caribbean, aims to contribute to the economic, political, social and cultural integration of de region, with a vision anti-neoliberal and anti-imperialist. To achieve this objective, we will use the final documents of the Foro de São Paulo meetings. We will divide these documents into two moments: the period 1990-2009 and the period 2010-2019, focusing the empirical analysis on aspects concerning the Latin American and Caribbean political economy. The specific objective of this research is to analyze how the Foro de São Paulo interpreted the 2007-2008 world financial crisis. We will analyse, in addition to the final documents, some background-document from the FSP meetings. We will also analyze the document called the Consenso de Nuestra América. Our hypothesis is that the constitution of the document Consenso de Nuestra América is a direct consequence of the impact of the 2008 crisis on the political parties and popular movements that make up the Foro de São Paulo. In addition to the empirical analysis, we will use specialized bibliography that aims to analyze the interpretations of contemporary capitalism and the possibilities open to Latin American development in that same period.
