SUMMARY:

The present work seeks to understand how Operation Lava Jato and the political crisis of the 2016 impeachment contributed to the downfall of Brazilian heavy construction companies. We start from the hypothesis that these companies were part of the internal bourgeoisie, a fraction of the hegemonic class in PT governments. There was an offensive by imperialist interests, with Operation Lava Jato as an instrument, which resulted in the exchange of hegemony by the bourgeoisie associated with these interests, represented in the Temer and Bolsonaro governments. In order to reach our objective, we will analyze the history of the relationship between this sector of the bourgeoisie and the Brazilian State, with emphasis on the policies implemented during the PT governments that favored the sector. In addition, we will show the elements that link Operation Lava Jato with external interests and the impacts that the Operation caused in the heavy civil construction sector and in the economy in general. We therefore intend, based on a Marxist analysis, to deepen the debate on the nature of PT governments and the role that different class fractions and foreign capital have in the country's political outcomes.
