SUMMARY:

The so-called Industry 4.0, also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Industrial Internet of Things, or also Smart Manufacturing, has been approached in recent years as a series of innovations in the fields of production, consumption, distribution and value management. The main technologies that comprise it are called additive manufacturing, the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence, big data, synthetic biology, 5G technology, among others. A crucial difference of this supposed new Industrial Revolution with relation to its precedents would be the integration between various areas of knowledge and the fusion between the physical, the biological and the digital in the construction of new ways of producing, offering, distributing and consuming goods and services. Accompanied by the speed of diffusion of these technologies, greater connectivity and sharing of information, these changes could be considered qualitatively disruptive. Structurally, there is not a definitive formalization of the concept of Industry 4.0 and its variations. It is highlighted by the literature, however, that it can lead to transformations in the company profile, in the diffusion of technical progress and in the dynamics of distribution and economic growth. Accordingly, this work aims to discuss the nature and impacts of the phenomenon,  from a post-Keynesian perspective, particularly its eventual economic impacts on distribution, or technical progress and income growth, considering the dynamics between the notions of effective demand, level of employment, profit tax and capital intensity. In order to do so, it intends to carry out a survey, classification and interpretation o the literature, so as to understand these changes from in light of the Post-Keynesian tradition. Such an exercise may be relevant for contributing to a deeper reflection at economic, political and social levels on the impacts of this new round of technological innovations. We advance as a preliminary hypothesis, to be developed or discarded throughout this study, that tendentially the impacts of the transformations of industry 4.0 could lead to a greater concentration of income, given the greater use of capital-intensive techniques combined with a lower share of wages in the GDP.
