An analysis of the role of whiteness in the 2016 U.S. and 2018 Brazilian presidential elections

RESUMO:

In November 2016 Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the
United States of America, and despite a campaign marked by sexism, racism and
xenophobia, he had strong support from the american people. His slogan: Make
America Great Again, referred to a glorious past, the American Dream, promising to
reverse the supposed degradation that nation has been suffering. With
demonstrations of extremist positions against social minorities and social policies,
his person growth in relevance and more loyal his audience became. After his
victory, several political analysts and part of the mainstream media tried to frame it
as a result of the population's dissatisfaction with the economic crisis that the country
was going through but the emergence of other issues. However, a year after his
election in August 2018, far-right groups, including white supremacists, marched
through the streets of CharlottesVille, Virginia, with their semi-automatic rifles,
swastikas, confederate flags and signs in support of Trump. Empowered, white
supremacists seemed to give the "enough" speech, stooding against the social
changes that the country has undergone in the last decade, which were the main
focus of Donald Trump's criticisms. From that moment several authors began to
detect a strong element in the identity of Trump's voter, and it was the whiteness. In
2018, in the Federative Republic of Brazil, a figure very similar to Donald Trump was
also elected. Jair Messias Bolsonaro, a former Brazilian Army captain and former
Federal Deputy, known for his criticisms of social policies initiated in recent decades
and his persecution of minorities, was elected president of the Brazilian federal
executive. Considering the way in which both personalities gained support from part
of the population due their radical, and often openly prejudiced, positions, we will try
to establish a parallel between the two cases seeking to understand the role of
whiteness as an ideology in both scenarios. Can the ‘white resentment’, the feeling
of being threatened by the economic crisis and the advancement of affirmative
policies for racialized populations have played a role in your elections and
governments?
