Analysis of participation in global value chains of the textile industry:
a comparative study of catching-up processes from China and falling behind Brazil from the 1990s.
This work compares the developing and insertion processes of Chinese and
Brazilian textiles’ industry on global value chains, from 1990 onwards,
and intends to explain the success factors of the Chinese initiatives to
promote technological catching-up process, while Brazilian industry has
gone through a falling behind process, loosing participation in global
exporting volumes of textiles and garment within the study timeframe.
The main objective is to evaluate insertion mechanisms on global value
chains and the observed outcomes in each of the countries studied,
comparing the current results of each in global textiles’ market. The
proposal is based on a quantitative approach when evaluating industrial
policies, and a quantitative approach, when analyzing production outputs
and exports figures of textiles segment during the timeframe studied.
The conclusion presents the most relevant success factors to include the
textiles industry in global value chains and suggest some alternatives
to re-insert Brazilian textiles industry as a major player in global
textiles’ market.
