RESUMO:

In the last evaluation of the International Student Assessment Program (PISA) of 2015, Brazil won the last place among the member countries and non-OECD members interested in participating in the Financial Literacy Questionnaire. But what led the country to achieve such a position? Did the Brazilian students who answered the questionnaire did not have access to any financial education course during their personal growth? Or perhaps the parental figures did not pass on personal financial literacy to their children? These questions are directed to the channels of transmission of financial literacy that the young person can obtain during their growth, and why, as a possible intermediary of the teachings about financial matters, besides the financial education courses provided inside or outside schools, parental figures of young adults who are about to enter a phase of total or partial financial independence. Access to financial literacy enables individuals to broaden their knowledge, mature their behaviors and attitudes, to achieve the self-efficacy necessary for spending and savings planning, as well as dealing with different forms of interest and risk diversification. This article aims at understanding the links that the teaching of financial education in and out of schools, in addition to the teachings passed on by the parental figures in the course of a student's life, can provide positive conscious behavior regarding financial obligations. Thus, data focused on the individual, family, community and even the global scale for Brazil were selected, as well as for 14 other economies that will serve as a comparison, aiming to associate direct experiences with financial education courses and the transmission of financial skills of the parents to the children with the behavior and attitude of the 15 year old students in financial literacy. Previous results predict that access to some financial education course positively influences students' conscious behavior and financial literacy, in addition to dialogue with parents that has a similar effect.
