BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS: A BRIEF LOOK AT THE FINANCIAL BEHAVIOR OF CLASSES
“D” AND “E” IN BRAZIL AS OF 2010

PAGES: 96
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Economia
SUMMARY:

This research aims to understand the relationship between
behavioral economics and financial decision-making, focusing on economic
classes “D” and “E” from 2010 onwards. The motivation of this research
is based on the fact that such members of these classes are sometimes
neglected in the spheres of public policy, causing direct impacts on
their financial decisions and indirect impacts on society as a whole.
Technology advances more and more quickly in our society. Studies
indicate that the 2010s were the ones that most evidenced such advances
and, with that, new forms of economy, such as the creative economy, for
example, led by startups, which assumed a relevant space in people's
daily lives. At the same time, a new way of consuming information is
emerging, mainly through smartphones: social networks, videos, digital
groups between close people, TV and Radios, which are also available
online, etc. With all this chain of information, a problem emerges with
regard to finance, more specifically in relation to Financial Education:
how to increase financial inclusion, in order to help the poorest people
to make better financial decisions?
It is precisely in this context that this research focused, working with
the hypothesis that people with less financial resources are
proportionally less reached by public policies of financial education
and basic information about finance. Consequently, sometimes such
classes of people make biased financial decisions and/or are
psychologically influenced by external factors, often implicitly. The
study of the economic behavior of these phenomena is called: Behavioral
Economics (BE).
Currently, CE has been the subject of study by many researchers and
scholars on the subject. However, there are few studies relating
financial decisions of people from lower classes with the lack of
financial education.
In this way, we will seek to connect the thoughts of researchers in the
field of behavioral economics with financial decision-making by people
from classes “D” and “E”.
