RESUMO:

The diffusion of Covid-19 across the world impacted abruptly world economy from the beginning of 2020. Measures to alleviate contagion implied the closure of several economic activities in a context of uncertainty related to the pandemic duration. The banking sector was affected worldwide. The literature for several countries points those loans recovered quickly, especially as a source of liquidity for companies. Other credit categories suffered reduction at the initial stages of the pandemic, especially those related to consumption. This surge in loans was possibly funded by a large inflow of deposits during the same period. This paper analyses the banking market in the state of São Paulo, whose behavior was like the one previously described. Results indicate that public banks did not have a differentiated role in supplying cred and attracting deposits. Total assets and equity ratio impacted credit negatively. For deposits, total asset, equity ratio and liquid assets impacted positively, behavior consistent with the flight-to-safety view by depositors.
