RESUMO:

The concern with environmental issues is increasingly evident, since nature is not able to regenerate at the same speed with which natural resources are demanded. Anthropocentrism, a term increasingly used in the scientific environment, has become a mark of human civilization, which permanently lives with environmental problems. To make matters worse, the models of neoclassical economics do not contemplate environmental costs, leading to the belief that natural resources are infinite and that the planet has no physical and ecosystemic limits, which is something obviously inconceivable. The idea of a continuous and exponential economic growth conflicts with environmental issues, because the economy is only a subsystem of a much larger system. It seems logical that when the economy, an open subsystem, grows, this can turn into a problem because the planet has limits to grow.  Therefore, continued economic growth may become incompatible with the planet, and there are strong indications that we have reached this point. This leads us to believe that we are converging on what we might call environmental collapse. Selfishness makes us unable to realize this, for it does not allow us to reflect that we are only a small cell in the living organism called the planet, on which other creatures also depend. This selfishness makes us reserve our affection for the people we care about, forgetting that there are other living beings around us who depend on the nature we destroy. Therefore, solving environmental problems also involves solving the problem of selfishness, even because environmental problems are not restricted only to the human being, but they extend to other forms of life. This dissertation intends to present a way of thinking about environmental issues from the perspective of biospherical altruism, abandoning institutionalized selfishness, which is a striking characteristic of our anthropocentric society. We believe that by changing the way we think about environmental issues, we can modify the current scenario. We intend to propose this change through environmental education. Thus, schools play a fundamental role, arousing interest for a more altruistic behavior. In this case it will be possible to transcend the idea of the rational and self-interested individual, who cares about environmental issues only when there is a perception of risks and threats related to his own well-being and that of his closest ones, to act beyond this selfish frontier. Human conduct would thus transcend into a sense of compassion for all living beings on the planet, intrinsically considering the value of each species in the ecosystem as well as nature at its core.
