Brazil was a successful case of economic growth based on import substitution. At the end of last century and after a period of growth stagnation, trade openness became a policy to help lower inflation by increasing competitiveness. Recently, with the China shock, the country economy has been exposed to greater competition. In a similar time period, an increase in the proportion of formalized female workers took place on Brazilian labor market. In order to verify if trade openness has contributed to the improvement of women's conditions in the Brazilian labor market, the proposed master's thesis is composed of two empirical exercises. The first exercise is more developed and almost completed. Considering that the Brazilian local labor markets (or microregions) were affected by the China shock in different ways, it was possible to identify whether the increase in domestic competition, caused by the expansion of Chinese participation on international trade was able to influence the proportion of women in the formal labor market between 2000 and 2013 with data from the Brazilian formal labor market (RAIS) and information on trade flows between Brazil and China (BACI database). The second exercise remains a work in progress. The main purpose is to examine whether China shock contributed to the reduction of occupational segregation by gender in Brazil, through the increase in the proportion of women employed in traditionally male occupations in the formal market, between 1996 and 2013, now exploring how the Brazilian sectors of economic activities were affected by this trade shock. The main databases for this exercise are the same from the first exercise (RAIS and BACI).
